Financial Independence & Choice

Financial independence is a matter of dignity and freedom. We support sex workers to earn safely, save confidently, and make choices that shape their own futures

Building Pathways to Daily Income

For many sex workers, vending and small-scale trading offer a pathway to immediate income and survival with dignity. Through access to tools, opportunities, and peer support, community members are able to engage in street-based trade that helps them meet daily needs while building independence and stability. As a community, we support this process by helping to provide the basic tools and linkages needed to make this work possible, strengthening their ability to earn safely and sustainably.

From Skills to Sustainable Enterprise

Within the community, everyday skills are being transformed into small, sustainable enterprises that create consistent and dignified income. From producing household goods to developing market-ready products, sex workers are building businesses that reflect their strengths and lived experiences. As a collective, we support by creating access to opportunities, knowledge, and peer networks that help strengthen these income-generating initiatives and promote long-term economic independence.

Care Work, Beauty, and Self-Employment

Within the community, beauty, wellness, and care work have become important pathways to income and independence. Sex workers are using their skills in massage, hair care and personal grooming services to earn safely and on their own terms. With peer support and shared experience, these services continue to grow as sustainable sources of livelihood and dignity.

Food Work and Community Catering

Cooking and food work provide a familiar and dependable source of income within the community. Many sex workers engage in catering, food vending, and small kitchen-based businesses that help them support their families and meet daily needs. With shared knowledge and peer encouragement, these activities grow into steady, dignified sources of livelihood.

Building Sustainable Livelihoods

We supported community members to access the NYOTA business grant program, where beneficiaries received KES 25,000 in start-up capital and underwent a year of entrepreneurship training. Through skills development, mentorship, and financial support, participants were empowered to establish and grow businesses that strengthen their economic independence.

Community-Led Sustainability Through Social Enterprise

To support long-term stability and independence, the community has developed shared income-generating initiatives that help sustain essential programs. One of these is a social enterprise Airbnb model that contributes to funding survivor support, advocacy, and economic empowerment work. This approach ensures that resources are generated in a way that remains rooted in the community, strengthening collective resilience while supporting ongoing services
